  • 1 ¾ cups of Graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup of chopped pecans

  • 1 ⅓ cups of sweetened, flaked coconut
  • 1 (14-ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk

Making the 7-layer bars recipe

The true magic of these 7-layer bars is how easy they are to prepare! Once the Graham cracker crust is made, everything just gets layered over the top of it and then baked.

Plate of 7 layer magic bars

Start by preheating the oven to 350º F (176ºC). Line a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with parchment paper. Leave some extra paper on the edges to use later as “handles” to remove the bars easily when they are cooked.

Melt the butter on the stove, or in the microwave. Add the Graham cracker crumbs and mix well.

Place the crumbs in the prepared pan and press down firmly with the bottom of a measuring cup.

Adding the 7 layers

Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the top of the Graham cracker crust. Top them with the chocolate chips.

Next, sprinkle on the white chocolate chips. The butterscotch chips come next, and then, the sweetened, flaked coconut.

For the final layer, pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top.

Note: Make sure to check your can to ensure that you are using sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk. The cans look similar, but taste very different. This recipe needs the flavor from the sweetened condensed milk.

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake until the top is golden brown, about 22-25 minutes.

Remove the pan from the oven, and set it on a wire rack to cool for about 2 hours, keeping the bars in the pan while cooling.

Remove the 7-layer bars from the pan by pulling out the parchment paper by its edges. Transfer the bar dessert to a cutting board.

Using a sharp knife, cut the dessert into 16 slices.

I just made these and unfortunately they did not turn out. Should there be more than 3/4 cups of graham cracker crumbs? Looking at other recipes, they use 1.5 cups. The crumbs did not fill the bottom of a 9x13 pan and after pouring the sweetened condensed milk over the top, it was a mess, especially after baking.

Hi Kristy. I have another recipe on the site where I used more graham crackers. One uses two and one uses 3 cups. I made these for a party and it's been a while. They turned out fine but I do think I did make a mistake in the recipe when I look at my photo shots. I think I used 1 3/4 cups, not 3/4 cups. I'll make them again soon and double check the recipe. So sorry that I caused you a bad recipe. Carol
