This recipe for taco wraps takes the tastes of cheeseburgers and spicy tacos and combines them into one tasty Mexican tortilla recipe. This is one of my husband’s favorite 30-minute meals.
Do you love the taste of tacos? If so, you’ll love this delicious lunchtime meal. (See my easy taco melts for another tasty taco-flavored idea.)
For today’s recipe, I started with the idea of cheeseburger wraps and then noticed the chili peppers growing in my garden and ended up with a spicier cheeseburger taco recipe.
This recipe lets us swap the higher-calorie hard taco shell for a soft tortilla to make a wrap version of tacos!

The ingredients for the tortilla wrap fillings
Look at the colors of these ingredients! It’s a long list, but most of them are in a normal pantry. My mouth is eagerly awaiting to see what happens when they are combined.
- 2 teaspoons of olive oil
- 1 pound of lean ground beef (96% lean)
- 2-3 cloves of garlic
- 1 medium yellow onion
- 2-3 small jalapeno peppers
- 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons of ketchup
- 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
- ½ cup low-fat beef broth
- 1 cup of light mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup of spinach
- 1 tomato, chopped
- ½ cup of Greek yogurt
- 8 Xtreme Wellness whole wheat flour tortillas
- cilantro or parsley, to garnish
You can use store-bought taco seasoning or make these wraps with your own homemade taco seasoning mix.

How to make taco wraps
This recipe is quick and easy to do, which makes it perfect for a busy weeknight. You will have it on the table in less than 30 minutes, and your family will love it!
Brown the meat
- Add the olive oil to a pan over medium heat.
- Brown the ground beef in a small amount of oil until it is no longer pink.

- In the same pan, add the onions, garlic, and jalapeño peppers.
- Cook until the vegetables are tender and translucent – about 5 minutes.

Add your flavorings
- Add the ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce, along with your taco seasonings, to the browned meat.
- Stir to combine the flavor for a few minutes.
- Add the beef broth to keep the spice mixture just right. I used half a cup. Your mileage may vary!

Let’s make the wraps!
We’ve only been cooking for about 15 minutes, and it’s already time to roll all those flavors into one delicious wrap!
- You can either wrap the tortilla ingredients and then heat them in the microwave, or heat the tortillas first and then wrap the ingredients.
- The cheese won’t melt quite as much if you heat the tortillas first, but they will be easier to handle.
- Lay out a wrap and add ground beef.
- Add tomatoes, cheese, spinach, and Greek yogurt.
- Keep the filling to about 2/3 of the tortilla. This makes wrapping them easier.
Fold the ends in and wrap, seam side down.
If you heat after wrapping, just warm the tortillas in the microwave for about 30 seconds each until the cheese has melted.
How do these taco wraps taste?
These healthy tortilla wraps are savory and full of flavor. The jalapeño peppers add some spice, but it’s not too much heat.
My husband likes very spicy foods, and I, not so much, so they were a good compromise. You can add a bit of hot sauce if you like more heat.
They are great the first day and also tasted good the next day as well. I just heated the leftover fillings and wraps on the second day, and we enjoyed them for lunch.
What to serve with these spicy cheeseburger wraps
These wraps are fine to serve on their own, but if you want to make more of a meal out of them, you can add one of these sides:
Serving Idea: You can also heat these and let them cool, and then slice them into pinwheels to make a taco wrap appetizer for a party!
How many calories are in a taco wrap?
The full nutritional breakdown can be found under the recipe card below, but these wraps are great for those on a diet.
They have only 229 calories each and are low in saturated fat, high in fiber, and very high in protein.
Want to make these taco wraps even lighter?
The calorie count on these wraps is already low, but if you want to save a few more calories, switch over to ground turkey or ground chicken for an even lighter wrap recipe.
How to make these Mexican tortilla wraps healthier?
Normal wraps can be very high in fat and calories.
Even with a heavy recipe, it is possible to lighten it up and make it healthier. These are the steps I took:

- I used a lower-carb wrap that is also low in calories. I chose Xtreme Wellness whole wheat wraps with flaxseed – just 50 calories, 0g of fat, and 16g of carbs.
- I chose a light Mozzarella cheese from Trader Joe’s. It melts well and has great flavor.
- My ground beef is the 96% lean type, which keeps the calories and fat down.
- I limited the oil to just enough to keep the ingredients from sticking.
- I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. This saves calories and fat and adds protein to the healthy tortillas recipe.
