  • 8 ounces of fresh strawberries
  • 6 ounces of fresh blueberries

Refrigerate this mixture for at least 1 to 2 hours to allow the alcohol to infuse the fruit.

Close to serving time, peel the Granny Smith apples and cut them into slices about ¼ inch thick.

Use a 1-inch, star-shaped cookie cutter to cut the slices into stars.

Tip: Pour some of the champagne in a bowl and add the apple stars as you cut them out. The carbonation in the champagne creates a barrier against oxygen and keeps the apples from turning brown. It also infuses the apples with the flavor of champagne!

Remove the pitcher from the fridge and stir in the apple stars and champagne.

Variations on the 4th of July drink recipe

There are several ways to change this recipe to use the ingredients you have on hand.

  • This recipe uses strawberries and raspberries, but you can use any red fruit. Watermelon, cherries, and red grapes taste great, too.
  • Instead of the apples, you could cut the stars from pears, white peaches, or pineapple.
  • If you don’t have champagne, any sparkling wine can be used.
  • Rosé also works as a base for the sangria if you don’t have sauvignon blanc on hand.
