This ground turkey chili has three different types of beans and a boatload of flavor. This is the latest addition to my collection of crock pot recipes.
In our house, a great-tasting chili is the ultimate winter comfort food. When the temps are cold and the weather is harsh, there is nothing quite like a big steaming bowl of chili to warm you to the bones.
I make the recipe in two parts. The first is done in about 20 minutes at the beginning of the day on the stovetop, and the in the second part everything cooks to perfection in the crock pot.
One of the best things about this recipe is that it cooks all day long in the slow cooker, leaving time to relax later when dinner time rolls around. Keep reading to learn how to make this ground turkey chili recipe.
Ingredients for this ground turkey chili
I used three types of beans in this recipe -black beans, pinto beans, and Great Northern beans. Since I will be using ground turkey, I want to enhance the flavor of the chili with lighter beans.
Don’t worry…it will still pack a great chili punch (the spices make sure of that), but the whole meal just feels lighter and cleaner.
- 1 cup low sodium chicken broth
- 28 ounces diced tomatoes
- 15 ounces black beans, rinsed
- 15 ounces pink beans, rinsed
- 15 ounces great northern beans, rinsed
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium white onion, chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 6 small sweet peppers, chopped
- 1 pound lean ground turkey
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 ½ tablespoons flour
- Grated cheese, low fat sour cream and cilantro, to garnish
How to make the crockpot ground turkey chili recipe
The first part of the recipe is as easy as it gets. Just dump the beans, some chicken stock, and the canned tomatoes into the slow cooker.
Next, heat some olive oil in a nonstick pan and cook the onions, garlic, and peppers. I used baby sweet peppers for color and flavor.
Once the veggies are cooked, stir in the ground turkey. Be sure to break it up so that the pieces are small to give the chili a nice texture when it’s done.
Look at the spices that will go into this mixture for the next step. I can taste the flavor just by looking at them!
The last step is to stir in the tomato paste, a couple of cups of low-sodium chicken broth, and a bit of flour. Give it all a stir until the mixture is fragrant and starting to thicken.
That’s it! Just pour this mixture into the slow cooker, give it all a good stir and cover, and cook on low for about 8-10 hours.
This slow cooker ground turkey chili will keep you warm and cozy all winter. It is healthy, hearty and just bursting with flavor.
Add some grated cheese and a bit of low-fat sour cream, and garnish with some fresh cilantro. Each bite of this delicious chili is filling, tasty and so warming.
It is full of fiber, won’t break the calorie bank, and will keep you full and satisfied for hours.
