Skittles Cheese Balls – Sweet and Sour Super Bowl Cheese Ball Recipes

Are you looking for a Super Bowl recipe that will tempt your sweet tooth? These two versions of Skittles cheese balls are easy to prepare and use both sweet and sour Skittles candy as their topping.

It’s that time of the year!  I love it when the Super Bowl rolls around each year. My daughter has recently discovered a love of all things football.

I thought it would be fun to share two of my favorite game day appetizers with her to celebrate the occasion.

These big game cheese balls are fun, colorful, and most of all – delicious and easy appetizers

These cheese balls have a cheesecake like texture and are just plain amazing!

Since Jess is also a huge Skittles fan (as in dive right in there and have a Skittles party kind of gal) I thought that using her favorite candy in cheese ball recipes would be a nice surprise for her.

Recipes using Skittles candy.

I enjoy making recipes with Skittles. The candy lends itself to all sorts of sweet dessert ideas. Be sure to check out my Skittles sugar cookies for another fun idea.

Don’t stop at just sweet recipes, though. Skittles can be used in savory recipes too.

For this year’s big game fun, I plan to make two cheese balls that use Skittles candy.  One will make use of the normal Skittles candy in a sweet recipe, and the other will use Skittles sour candy for a more savory idea.

These Super Bowl cheese ball recipes have a whole sweet and sour thing going on for big game, and will satisfy both taste buds in a fun way.  Which are you?  A sweet or a sour Skittles kind of person?Packages of Skittles sweet and sour candy on a wooden board.

Both of these cheese ball appetizers are fun to make.  With ingredients like these, it’s also a tempting project! I bet you won’t be able to resist sampling the candy while you prepare the cheese balls!

Be sure to have extra Skittles on hand for snacking, both during the big game day and during the day you make these tasty cheese ball recipes!

Both appetizers are a version of a candied cream cheese dip, but each has its own twist on the idea.

Making the sweet Skittles cheese ball.

The sweet Skittles candy ball combines peanut butter and brown sugar and has the Skittles candy both on the inside and decorating the outside of the ball.  How fun and colorful this will be on your game day table!

I used shortbread wafers and fruit for dipping into this sweet cheese ball. Vanilla wafers also work well.

The consistency of this easy cheese ball recipe is perfect for dipping.  It is not too thick and dips well on a small wafer style cookie. It is sweet and creamy and will satisfy your sweet tooth with just a few nibbles.

Making the sour Skittles cheese ball.

The sour Skittles cheese ball recipe has most of the Skittles sour candy inside the ball, along with nuts, sharp cheddar, dried cranberries[ and cream cheese.

This slightly more savory ball with a tangy sweet surprise is coated with chopped pecans and has a few Skittles sour candies on top. I will serve this one with some sliced vegetables and round twist pretzels.

This Skittles Sour cheese ball is served with knot pretzels and vegetable sticks and topped with sour Skittles candy.

The sour ball has a consistency more like a normal cheese ball.  Have a knife nearby to spread on your veggies or pretzels.

It is tart and tangy, with lots of crunch and just a hint of sweetness.

Whichever Super Bowl cheese ball recipe is your favorite, one thing will be sure ~ both are super delicious and a fun addition to your game day celebration.

Both dips are super fun and your guests will love them. They are creamy, chunky and will satisfy your taste buds, whether then prefer sweet or sour flavors.

For best consistency, remove them from the fridge about 30 minutes or so before party time so that they can be easily dipped or spread.

These two Super Bowl cheese ball recipes are not only great tasting but colorful as well!  They will disappear from your game day table before you can say Super Bowl!

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups of Skittles candy, divided
  • Sugar wafers or fruit for dipping

For the sour cheese ball:

  • 8 ounces of cream cheese at room temperature
  • 8 ounces of sharp white cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
  • Dash of kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup of dried cranberries, chopped
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pecans

Instructions

To make the sweet cheese ball:

Skittles sweet game day party ball

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together the cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Beat in the powdered sugar, brown sugar, peanut butter and vanilla extract.
  3. Add 1/4 cup of the Skittle candy. Scrape the mixture out of the bowl and place on some plastic wrap and form it into a ball.
  4. Refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight. (the mixture will be quite sticky so the longer you refrigerate it, the easier it will be to add the Skittles to the outside of the ball)
  5. In a small shallow bowl or plate, add the remaining 1 cup of Skittles candy. Unwrap the cheese ball and roll into the Skittles until completely covered. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  6. For easier spreading, remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving.

To make the sour cheese ball

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer combine the cream cheese, milk, salt, and cheddar cheese until smooth.
  2. Mix in the cranberries, chopped walnuts and then carefully fold in the Skittles sour candy.
  3. Don't use the mixer for the candies, it will make the colors run.
  4. Place plastic wrap on a counter and place the cheese ball ingredients.
  5. Wrap and form it into a ball and place in the fridge for 1 hour until set.
  6. Place the chopped pecans on a plate and roll the cheese ball in them.
  7. Add a few of the Skittles sour candy on the top of the ball for decoration.
  8. Serve with knot pretzels and or sliced vegetables.
  9. For easier spreading, remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving.
